Know the Different Types of Wire Connectors

WHAT ARE ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS?

Electrical connectors are components used to facilitate the connection of cables, facilitating amendments and making installations safer. A wire connector is an electrical connector, that is, a device that performs the connection between one or more points where a signal communication is required.
Electrical connectors are used in the electrical connection between conductors and have the function of eliminating or reducing leakage current. They are used to splice parts of the same wire and prevent loss of electricity. Easy and practical to use, you can choose the electrical wire connector that best suits your needs.

TYPES OF ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS

There are a few different types of connectors such as the hot plug connector, the split bolt connector, porcelain connector, multiple sindal connector and twist connector.
It is important to highlight that there is no better connector, what exists are different types of connectors, which have different uses.
Depending on your needs, you will need one type of connector or another, for example: there are some that are used without stripping the wires and do not require the use of specials tools, while others can be reused and allow to connect and isolate at the same time.

HOW TO USE THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS

As already mentioned, wire connectors are used to assemble, repair or perform maintenance on the electrical network. Each type of connector has its peculiarities, therefore, It is important to know a little more about each of them:

AUTOMATIC CONNECTION CONNECTOR

The hot plug connectors can be used in different applications such as, for example, in residential installations, ceiling fans, light fixtures and splices for sockets. In addition to being practical, such components offer, at the same time, connection and isolation. Therefore, you will not need to use insulating tape in the splice made with an automatic connection. You will have to look for the correct model for the splice you want to make, there are several models with different capacities.

  • SPLIT BOLT CONNECTOR

The split bolt connectors are recommended and suitable for use in junction boxes and passage in electrical installations in general. In splices made with split bolt connectors, it is, you need to insulate with self-fusion tape. This connector is versatile and can be used in any splicing between two cables, including in cases where it is necessary to splice rigid cables with flexible cables.
The split bolt allows for an extension splice or a branch splice. To use it, the first step is to strip the cables, then open the terminal and completely remove the nut. Soon, you must fit the cables into the terminal slot, put the nut back on and tighten with the suitable screwdriver. You will have to look for the correct model for the splice you want to perform, there are several models with different cap.

  • PORCELAIN CONNECTOR

The porcelain connector is the most suitable model for splicing in places with high temperature, which is why it is the most suitable model for the shower. It's a connector with great thermal insulation, which does not require the use of insulating tape.
You can find bipolar or tripolar porcelain connectors with different capabilities. Handling this type of connector is simple: just use the screwdriver suitable for loosening the screws of the connection terminals, then inserting the cables and tightening the screws again.

  • SINDAL MULTIPLE CONNECTOR / POLYETHYLENE MULTIPLE CONNECTOR

The polyethylene multiple connector, well known as Sindal connector, is an excellent option for splicing control panels, such as a terminal strip. This type of connector has several terminals together and provides excellent thermal insulation.
The handling of this type of connector is similar to that of porcelain: just use the screwdriver adequate slot to loosen the screws of the connection terminals, then insert the cables and tighten the screws again. You will be able to find multiple connectors of polyethylene with a capacity of up to 4, 6, 10 or 16 mm2, just choose which one will suit your needs.

  • TORSION CONNECTOR

Twist connectors are great options for anyone looking to make quick and easy cable splices.
safe. As with automatic connectors, they are very simple to handle and are great insulators. They can be used in ceiling fans, splices for light fixtures, junction boxes and socket amendments, for example, the twist connectors have different colors: red, yellow, orange, blue and gray.
It is important to pay attention, because each connector color supports a different current and gauge. Another important information is that the gauge corresponds to the sum of the gauges of the two cables that will be spliced in the connector, that is, if the splice is 2 cables of 3 mm2, you must use a connector for gauge of at least 6 mm2. Handling is super simple, just strip the cables, unite the ends, introduce them into the connector and screw them in until they are firm.
• The gray connector is for gauges between 0.8 and 2.5 mm2, supporting up to 21 amps.
• The blue connector is for gauges between 0.8 and 4.5 mm2, supporting up to 28 amps
• The orange connector is for gauges between 1.5 and 6 mm2, supporting up to 36 amps
• The yellow connector is for gauges between 2.5 and 6 mm2, supporting up to 36 amps.
• The red connector is for gauges between 4.5 and 17 mm2, supporting up to 68 amps.

WHICH CARE NEEDED WHEN USING WIRES CONNECTORS?

Now that we've seen the different types of electrical connectors, it's important to point out that you must be careful when handling them. Certain precautions are necessary to avoid accidents, among these measures are: turn off the main switch of the place, check if the equipment is without power, do not expose the connectors to water and humidity, check if the model allows connection with different phases on the same connector, check the current limit that that model allows, and not insert more than one wire in the same hole.
