Heat Shrink Tubing (Color-Coded)

There are two layers. The outer one shrinks when heated; the inner one is an adhesive that melts at the same time and flows around the wire. So the tubing does not just cover the joint, it closes onto it.

2:1 — it draws down to half its original diameter. Pick a size that slides over the joint easily and still has room to close down onto the wire on both sides of it.

A heat gun is easiest to control, but a lighter or even a hair dryer will do it. Keep the heat moving around the tubing rather than holding it on one spot.

The adhesive lining melts and grips the wire insulation at each end, which closes the path water would wick along. Heat it until the tubing is tight and you can see the adhesive has flowed.

It is polyolefin, and resistant to UV, acids and alkalis. It is used on boats and outdoor lighting as well as under the hood.

Slide the tubing onto the wire before you make the joint, and choose a diameter that passes over the finished joint without forcing. The colours mark the different diameters so you can find the one you need by sight.
